In the 19th century John Pollock Cumming and his family lived at this location, next to the Dyckman family. J.P.Cumming was a conductor on the Underground Railroad and a strong abolitionist. The home sheltered escaped slaves. What is now Cumming Street was then the driveway of the Cumming family home in the farmlands of Inwood. John P. Cumming was my great-great-great grandfather.
